İsa Bey Mosque

Built in 1375 for the Aydınid ruler İsa Bey, this is one of the oldest and most unusual mosques in Anatolia — an asymmetric plan, an ornate west façade, and a courtyard whose granite columns were carried up from the ruins of Ephesus and the harbour baths.

It is still a working mosque and still quiet. Dress modestly, take your shoes off at the door, and avoid prayer times.

It sits directly between the Temple of Artemis and the basilica, so it fits naturally into a walk up the hill rather than needing a trip of its own.
